Those of you who signed up with Microsoft to test out Windows 7 RC1 should have received e-mail from them by now now since there’s just a few days to go before Windows 7 Release Candidate starts shutting down every two hours.

When will this happen? i.e. When will Windows 7 Release Candidate Expire?
From March 1, 2010

What will happen from March 1, 2010 to those who are using Windows 7 RC?
A hellish (if that’s a word) experience, your computer will shut down every two hours, that’s Microsoft way of telling you to get a full version of Windows 7 instead of using Windows 7 RC. You will still be able to use Windows 7 RC until June 1, 2010 but experience the shutdowns.

What can be done to avoid shutdown every two hours in Windows 7 Release Candidate version after March 1, 2010?
Get rid of Windows 7 Release Candidate and get a full version of it or just get back to whichever operating system you were using.

Where can I get excellent cheap deals for Windows 7?
Right here:

and before I forget, here’s the email received from Microsoft about Windows 7 RC nearing its end, it had a good run. Kudos MSFT!

It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate

While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC. It had a very good run.

Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. For more details about replacing the RC, see the Knowledge Base article KB 971767. For more information, visit the Window 7 Forum.

Thanks again for helping us test Windows 7.

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) worked with Microsoft during the production of Windows 7 Opinions on this are divided. “This is a suspicious case. NSA likes to eavesdrop and track citizens’ – director warns Electronics Privacy Information Center. “This conspiracy theory is nonsense” – reassured the managers of one of AVG Technologies.

The latest report, the Director of the Information Department of the American National Security Agency (NSA) at a meeting of the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism and National Security indicates that the agency was directly involved in the production Windows 7:

“NSA experts collaborated with Microsoft and some units of the Department of Defense by providing them with their knowledge and operational skills in the field of security of operating systems. The team worked on fine tuning the security solutions in the private and public sectors” – Richard Schaeffer said during a meeting with politicians.

“All activities covered the whole production cycle of the system. Thus it was easier to understand each other their assumptions and to introduce them into the final version of Windows 7″ – added Schaeffer.

It is known that this is not the first time the NSA has worked with Microsoft during the works on Windows. In 2007, the agency confirmed that its experts were involved in testing Windows Vista – their task was then to check whether the system will be compatible with the software and whether the government is safe. Previously, the NSA advised how best to secure Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Conspiracy theory

Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronics Privacy Information Center (EPIC) says that the NSA’s involvement in the design of operating systems for the private sector is a deeper issue, which has its roots already in the early ’90s. Rotenberg is opposed to such cooperation:

“When the NSA offers its assistance in planning for the private sector, there is a suspicion that the experts will prepare a gap in the product (backdoor), which then will serve the agency to track and eavesdrop on users’ – Rotenberg said.

“Companies in the private sector, of course, avoiding comment on the matter. It is not surprising, because the U.S. government is one of their largest customers. Oppose the NSA would have led to a significant decrease in software sales – Rotenberg warned.

Rotenberg fears are related to the fact that the NSA has been repeatedly accused of tapping phone calls and intercepting electronic messages of citizens.

Experts: “This is bullshit!”

Andrew Storms, director of the nCircle Security, does not believe in this conspiracy theory. “Impossible that Microsoft has agreed to such an absurd solution. Disclosure of the affair would be unacceptable from a business point of view and led to colossal losses.” – Storms said.

Roger Thompson, one of the managers AVG Technologies, is a similar view. “I just can not imagine that the NSA and Microsoft have committed to something so irresponsible. The consequences of disclosure of the affair would have been unimaginable. – Said Thompson.” Indeed, it would further claim that the NSA and Microsoft work together to protect computer systems against attacks from other countries . As for the official conspiracy Microsoft partnership – the NSA, is once again emphasize – is nonsense. ”

“We’ve already sold twice as many units as any OS in a comparable time frame,” Ballmer said. “Windows 7 is simply the best PC operating system that we or anyone else has ever built.”

By last week, Windows 7 accounted for 4 percent of Web-accessing devices, according to Net Applications; it took Vista more than seven months to reach that level.

Addressing the overall economy, Ballmer reiterated that things seem to have stabilized.

“The economy has, at least for now, leveled off,” he said.

The meeting is still going on and has just entered the question-and-answer session and I’ll update this post if anything interesting comes up. So far, though, it’s been mostly about local and legislative matters, rather than technological issues.

Microsoft claims Windows users running 64-bit versions of the operating system are less likely to get infected by attack code. According to Microsoft’s security team said that 64-bit Windows has some of the lowest reported malware infection rates in the first half of 2009.

According to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center 64-bit malware is still exceedingly rare in the wild. Based on data gleened from Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRC) the 64-bit version of Windows XP was 48 per cent less likely to be infected than the 32-bit edition during the first half of 2009; PCs running Vista 64-bit, meanwhile, were 35 per cent less likely to be infected than Vista 32-bit.

The blog said that that Windows 7 64-bit is the dominant flavor of that new OS as he touted its security. The blog claims that 64-bit Windows was safer by design than the less-powerful 32-bit version, ticking off such measures as PatchGuard, which makes it more difficult for malware to tamper with the operating system’s kernel.

A senior Dell executive is bullish about a recovery in PC demand from businesses, saying the Oct. 22 release of Windows 7 sparked a surge in PC sales for the company.

This surge in PC sales led by the release of Windows was preceded by slowdown as customers put off plans to buy new computers. This helps explain why Dell’s third-quarter revenue came in below analysts’ expectations, said Steve Felice, president of Dell’s business unit that’s focused on small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), during a conference call with reporters on Friday.

“At the beginning of October, we saw demand decline as customers put off their decision to buy, to wait for Windows 7 to fully launch. As soon as Oct. 22 hit, both our consumer business and our SMB business had a very healthy increase in demand,” Felice said.

Prior to the launch of Windows 7, Dell’s direct sales in the Americas were running at about 80 percent of the company’s expectations. However, once Microsoft released the new operating system, sales surged and that figure rose to 110 percent, he said.

“We didn’t just see that increase in the last 10 days of October, we’ve now seen three weeks of November where that demand has been pretty consistently up,” Felice said.

“That’s why even though analysts had expected even more revenue, we’re still quite bullish on the recovery that’s happening with the demand cycle in the commercial business and we believe you’ll see that in Q4,” he said.

Unlike larger rivals Hewlett-Packard and Acer, which have benefitted from a consumer-led recovery in PC demand, Dell remains heavily dependent on PC sales to large companies and SMBs, even as the company works to diversify the range of products and services that it offers.

“We’re not surprised to see the recovery at Dell come a little later than others might have reported,” Felice said, noting Dell’s earlier comments that the second quarter represented the bottom of the downturn and the company would see the beginning of a recovery during the third quarter.

“That’s exactly what we’re seeing and I think you’ll see continued strength in Q4,” he said.

The official Windows 7 Beta was released by Microsoft with the build version of 6.1.7000.0 (build 7000). This had leaked earlier to Internet via torrents. Before the official beta was released by Microsoft, screenshots of several different builds like build 7004, 7012, 7015 and 7016 of Windows 7 came up on different forums online.

The latest build to show in screenshots is Windows 7 build 7025. Microsoft has not confirmed anything about it yet but this might be true. The screenshots of Windows 7 build 7025 have been posted by a beta tester on Chinese forum. There’s are no conclusive changes in the user interface except some user interface touch ups to Control Panel, Media Player and different versions show up for installation now just like Windows Vista. Hope Microsoft will not confuse its customers like it did with Vista with many version releases.

The most notable thing in the said build 7025 is that Internet Explorer 8 has changed from Beta to Release Candidate 1 version 8.0.7025.0. The said screenshots show that Windows 7 Build 7025 has build version of 7025.0.x86fre.winmain.09120-1850, and is compiled on January 20th, 2009 at 1850 hours. The installed copy of Windows 7 Build 7025 will expire on July 2nd, 2009 too.

Above clearly shows the build and version of Windows 7 build 7025.0.x86fre.winmain.09120-1850. It might leak to Internet sooner or later and download links and torrents of build 7025.0.x86fre.winmain.09120-1850 might show up soon.
