Windows 7 Release Candidate Expiration

Those of you who signed up with Microsoft to test out Windows 7 RC1 should have received e-mail from them by now now since there’s just a few days to go before Windows 7 Release Candidate starts shutting down every two hours.

When will this happen? i.e. When will Windows 7 Release Candidate Expire?
From March 1, 2010

What will happen from March 1, 2010 to those who are using Windows 7 RC?
A hellish (if that’s a word) experience, your computer will shut down every two hours, that’s Microsoft way of telling you to get a full version of Windows 7 instead of using Windows 7 RC. You will still be able to use Windows 7 RC until June 1, 2010 but experience the shutdowns.

What can be done to avoid shutdown every two hours in Windows 7 Release Candidate version after March 1, 2010?
Get rid of Windows 7 Release Candidate and get a full version of it or just get back to whichever operating system you were using.

Windows 7 themes for Windows XP and Vista

Source: Download Squad

Not everyone is excited about Windows 7 – there are plenty of XP users that are more than happy to stick with their trusty old OS. Just because you don’t want to change the system doesn’t mean you can’t get Windows 7’s update visuals on your desktop.

As is often the case, themers have been more than happy to create transformation packs that allow Windows XP users to skin their desktop to look like Windows 7. Brad wrote about one from DeviantArt users last year – when it was assumed that Windows 7 would look pretty much the same as Vista.

Now, however, we’ve got some options that more accurately reproduce the superbar and other features that distinguish Windows 7 from its big brother.

Windows XP

SevenVG Refresh
Vishal Gupta has done an excellent job with this theme. It’s simple to install, looks great, and features both normal taskbar buttons and iconized mode.

Windows 7 Complete
What would a theme post be without at least one reference to DeivantArt? User DopeySneezy calls this one Complete, and he’s not kidding. Includes Windows 7 style system properties, display settings screens, and more.

Seven Remix 2.0
Niwrad Soft recently updated his theme, and it’s even more convincing than V1.0. Some users have reported .dll error messages, though I didn’t receive any during my tests.

For a less complete tweak, you can convert your taskbar to the superbar using the tool created by another DevArt user, flawless02.

Windows Vista

Windows 7 Essentials Pack
Another winner from DevArt, this one by Ka-Booka includes just about every UI tweak you could possibly want to make Vista look like Windows 7 – even a Windows Media Player 11 mod, though some of you may choose to skip that one based on previous feedback about the new look.
